Long before the Blue Devils ever took to the classrooms and the fields, the story of Davis began in quiet strength—on land first shaped by the Patwin Native Americans and after they moved on, awakened again by settlers who believed in its promise. The railroad arrived in 1868, transforming open farmland into a growing town called Davisville—a place suddenly alive with movement, connection, and possibility.

As Davis grew, so did its ambition toward building a community. The opening of the University Farm in 1908, an extension of UC Berkeley, infused the town with curiosity & innovation, and by 1914, that spirit gave rise to Davis High School. It began humbly, without a true home, but with something far more powerful—a belief that the future could be built here.
That spirit would be tested with a devastating fire in 1916 that could have shuttered the town completely—instead, Davis High School students chose to stand, igniting the flames of resilience through growth. By 1917, Davis became a city, rebuilding stronger and more determined.

At the same moment in history, across the world, another story of resilience was unfolding. During World War I, an elite infantry, Le Chasseurs Alpins—nicknamed “les Diables Bleus,” or “the Blue Devils”—earned global admiration for their courage in the harshest conditions. These victorious soldiers captured the imagination when they visited the United States in post-war 1918. Their legend joined them, symbolizing perseverance in the face of adversity. The Davis High School Students seized it, choosing “Blue Devils” as their mascot—a symbol not of fear, but of strength, unity, and intense determination in the face of hardship.

From a permanent campus in 1927 at 23 Russell Blvd to its modern home at 314 W 14th St where it resides now; Davis Senior High School grew alongside a city that never stopped moving forward. And through every generation, the meaning of “Blue Devils” deepens—becoming not just a name for resilience, but a mindset of a clear purpose of community carried in classrooms, on stages, and into the world beyond.
Because the truth is this: the Blue Devils stand as a promise—that no matter where you begin, we can become something built on courage, unity, and vision..something extraordinary.
